Earning My First Star: A First Timers Quest To Play the USDGC

2008 United States Disc Golf ChampionshipBY DANA VICICH: I learned a long time ago that if you set goals and work hard, good things happen.  When I started to have this mentality, athletics came easy for me. In soccer I started scoring goals, in baseball the ball started popping off my bat, in basketball the shots started to fall and now in disc golf the putts are starting to go in with more ease and frequency.

Every year in the back of my head, I think about qualifying for the USDGC.  My eye has been on the Illinois Rep Spot for the past three years.  As an AM in 2005 I played in the Open Division at the Peoria Open in hopes of winning the Illinois spot.  I finished in last place.  Last year, again playing up in the Open Division at IOS # 5- Rockford, I finished three strokes away from qualifying.  That brings us to 2008.  Nothing was going to stop me this year.  Unlike 2007, where my goal was to win Am-Worlds, 2008 was going to be my year to get to the USDGC.  I was going to qualify one way or another.

I started the year out fast and furious, playing events all over the country.  Every weekend was spent disc golfing wherever there was a tournament.  Like most rookies, I played some good golf and some not-so-good golf.  I played in three USDGC regional qualifiers: the Memorial, Atlanta Open and Bowling Green Open.  April was nearly over and I was 0-3.  This was about the time my disc golf train derailed.  No, not an injury, I got my first full-time job after graduating from Illinois State University in 2006.  I had to move to a town where no disc golf course could be seen for 35 miles. On top of that the non-friendly disc golf schedule severely hindered my game and my chances of qualifying.

The months passed by and I hadn’t cashed since May.  Determined, I thought back to my days playing soccer, baseball and basketball. I can vividly remember staying after soccer practice and learning to bend shots, staying late after baseball to hit off a tee, shooting free throws and three pointers for as long as they would let me stay in the gym.  I needed to dedicate myself to disc golf as I had with those other sports years ago and get that same mentality back.  So, every day before work, I went to the field to practice.  I would lug my basket out and practice putt.  Two hours of practicing just wasn’t enough, so I solved that problem by bringing my basket to work (I work at a Community Recreation Center) and began putting when I got off at 10pm.  Depending on the weather, I would putt inside or outside the Rec Center for 1-2.5 hours.  I’m pretty sure that our night janitor thinks that I’m nuts. (That’s ok because I think he is crazy too.)  I kept at it, and was finally feeling like I was getting somewhere just in time for the Illinois Open.  All my focus was on earning the Illinois spot.

The Illinois Open was finally here- A slow start had me in the middle of the pack and a ways away from being the top IL competitor.  My second round was much more respectable and bumped me up into the top 2008 Veterans Park Openhalf of the pack.  Going into day two, I felt pretty good about the courses.  My putter got hot and helped me work my way onto the second card and into the USDGC spot.  Another solid, bogey free fourth round sealed the deal for me- I was going to represent Illinois at the USDGC!

My hard work had paid off and I would soon be heading to Rock Hill.  Only one more obstacle was in my way, I needed to convince my boss to give me the time off from work.  Luckily, no one had asked for those days off- I was officially in!  I had joked after accepting the spot that I would quit my job if I couldn’t get the time off.  Glad it didn’t come down to that!

Next thing I know, it’s the Tuesday before the Championship I’m on a 6am flight out of Bloomington-Normal on my way to Atlanta, GA.  The flight and layover was uneventful and I was soon in Charlotte.  Right off the bat I run into Iowa disc golfer, Adam Olson in the airport.  Coincidently, I had played two rounds at the Illinois Open with AO.  We chatted for a few minutes and then we were on our separate ways to Winthrop.

I excitedly typed “Winthrop” into my GPS and soon I was on campus.  Not sure where to go once I got on campus, I had to ask a few times “Which way to the disc golf course?”  Finally, I caught glimpse of the course and World Champ Dave Feldberg and super caddie Steve Mills playing a practice round.  After a few more wrong turns, I finally found my way to the correct parking lot.  By now, it was getting late into the afternoon and I was in a race against time to get checked in, play a round and find my hotel before the player banquet.

It was an unbelievable feeling to actually be on the tee of hole 1.  I had watched the videos over and over and it gave me a good idea of what to expect, but to actually be on the course and playing it was a dream come true.  My game plan was to throw drives and upshots and to try and learn the course as much as I could in a 2008 Veterans Park Openfew hours.  Hole 1- This one really is a lot tighter than it looks in the videos.  After unloading my Rocs and Aviars, I was on my way.  The course played how I expected it would for the most part.    The spike hyzer or overhand shot over the trees on hole 4 was tougher than I thought it would be.  Lake Winthrop swallowed a disc of mine on hole 5.  This was also my first run in with some of the wonderful USDGC volunteers.  The volunteers really go out of their way to make you feel like a professional.  The beach (hole 6) was much smaller than I thought it would be- definitely one of the tougher greens on the course.  After playing the front, I felt that I had a pretty good grasp on how I would play these holes.  About the time I was starting the back 9, I ran into the group of Chris Sprague, David Wiggins Jr and Jeremy Koling and played the majority of the back with them.  Holes 11-13 may be the toughest stretch of holes on the course.  Even after throwing multiple shots and watching the rest of the group play 12, I still was in the dark on how to attack it.  888 is as tough as it looks on paper.  This one sets up great for the LHBH shot off the tee.  I landed my first two lefty drives in bounds and played the hole pretty well.  It was fun watching Koling ace run 14 with a Buzz.  15 was the only hole that I hole that I holed out, only because it was a drop in 3.  Upon stepping to the tee, I did not expect the straight shot on 16 to be so open.  I really thought the only route was the left to right shot around everything.  I spent a good twenty minutes fooling around on 17, long enough to throw a Champion Cobra in.  I felt pretty confident with the RHFH.  After spending some time fishing around for my disc it was getting late so I made my way to 18.  The rope along with the slope made 18 terribly difficult.  18’s green is also one of the toughest on the course with its severe slope down to the water.  I could see this hole ruining many good rounds.

Worn out, I made my way over to my hotel to check in and get a quick shower.  I highly recommend taking advantage of the great deal that the Wingate Inn offers.  Next stop: player banquet.

The banquet room was slightly small; I found an open spot up front with a few golfers I knew from Wisconsin.  It was inspiring being in the same room with so many disc golf legends and faces of the sport.  2008 Veterans Park OpenA table away sat Ken Climo, Dave Feldberg and Barry Shultz- the only three players to ever win.  Speeches from Tournament Directors’ Harold Duval and Jonathon Poole were both inspiring and informational.  This was also the same time that I learned about ‘earning my first star’.  Since this was my first USDGC experience, I was earning a star.  Only 12 golfers have played in all ten USDGC’s, earning ten stars.  These players received a round of applause as well as first dibs at our buffet-style dinner.  The dinner was spectacular as well as the company.  Before dinner ended, the tee times were read- I would be playing my first round with Jason Light and Chris Smith.

2008 Veterans Park OpenAfter dinner, it was time to get the player packs.  Everyone slowly shuffled out the door and outside and into the neighboring art gallery.  While waiting outside, I started to see a number of people with what looked to be a small blue suitcase.  Hmmm, what the heck is that?  I was thinking that maybe we would be getting Revolution Backpacks?  I make my way inside and see that the blue suitcases are in fact mid-sized coolers!  Along with the coolers we also were receiving USDGC huk lab hoodies.  So far this was the best player pack ever and I hadn’t even opened the cooler up yet.  Inside the cooler was a personalized USDGC t-shirt; the left sleeve had my name, state and 1 star.  The cooler, which had a huge Roc sticker on it, also had a personalized caddy bib, minis, DVD and a few other random things.  After the excitement of the player pack and dinner wore off, I realized I was dead tired and ready for bed.

Wednesday morning came quick and after a great hotel breakfast, it was back to Winthrop.  After warming up for a good hour, I caught a golf cart ride up to the pro shop.  All weekend there were hordes of volunteers in golf carts eagerly waiting to give rides.  Just one of the many perks of the weekend.  Once up around the pro shop I wandered around watching groups start and finish their rounds.  My tee time was fast approaching and I felt ready, this is what I had been working for.

Standing on # 1’s tee, I was zoned in and ready for some golf.  No shaking, no nervous coughs or sweaty palms, it was time.  My round started out pretty standard with pars on one to three.  On hole 4, I played a safe second shot over to the left side of the green.  With my heart pumping, I nailed a 60-footer for the 2008 Veterans Park Openbirdie three!  Next thing I know, I’m grinning ear to ear getting my picture taken for netting the bird.  Riding high from the birdie, I went with the left hand back hand (LHBH) shot off the tee on 5 and had a great drive.  Being able to throw 300+ ft left-handed comes in handy quite a few times at Winthrop Gold.  Unfortunately, my drive was my only good shot on hole 5.  My next shot found the water and I decided take the long way around to the basket (staying as far away from the water as possible!).  After it was all said and done, I had taken a 7 on hole 5.  Excitement struck our card on hole 6 with Jason Light acing!  After high fives and me missing my birdie putt I made sure to give Jason $5 for his ace.  I’m pretty sure he wasn’t in the ace fund!  After parking 7, I had my second birdie of the round, which ended up being my last for the day.  After a slew of pars I was hanging tough, sitting at even (par).  That didn’t last long, on hole 12 I threw back to back shots OB and ended up with my second seven of the round.  With only a short wait on 888, instead of sticking with my plan of going LHBH off the tee, I instead went with the straight shot over the road and did not make it in bounds.  With the new BUNCR rule in affect, I re-teed throwing two and made it safely to the landing zone.  After not sticking with my game plan, I suffered the consequences and took a 6.  I par’d my way all the way to 17.  Going with the RHFH I threw what looked to be a safe drive except it landed on the backside green a little hot and skipped.  The spotter ran over to where the hay bales and water meet and threw up a green flag, it stayed in!  Just as I raised my hands with joy, I was brought back down to earth with a red flag.  My disc had actually ended up out of bounds!  Again, with the BUNCR rule I was throwing two from the tee and this time safely landed my forehand shot.  I had a 40+ foot put to save my par but instead I missed and took a bogey four.  Feeling as though I could make up some ground with a big drive on 18, I foolishly ended up out of bounds.  On my approach, I felt like I threw a safe shot but no, I was OB again.  For the second time on the back nine, I had thrown back-to-back shots OB.  With a six on 18, I finished my first round with a 74 (+6).  It wasn’t the score I was looking for, but it could have been a lot higher.  I now felt like I had a better idea of how to play the back nine, specifically hole 11.

After the long round, I made my way to the player hospitality area for a late lunch.  Soon I was back on the course watching some of the last cards finish up.  It felt good to relax and watch others play the course.  After everyone had finished their round, I went back on the course to play a few holes back towards my car.  As I was pulling up to the Wingate Inn I decided to stop by the neighboring Cracker Barrel.  I had two things on my mind- eat and watch the Cubs.  My dinner was great and unfortunately the Cubs not so great.  I think I was asleep well before the final out in the 9th.  Soon I was up and eating another stellar breakfast at the hotel and on my way to get warmed up for round 2.

For my second round I was on the same card as Corey Wisenberg and Eric ‘Roady’ Roadhouse- I’d played with each of these guys earlier in the year.  I had hopes of playing the front 9 a few strokes better than round 1.  I started off with a par on hole 1 only to bogey holes 2 and 3.  Not really the start I was looking for, the poor play continued on the front with bogeys on 5, 6 and 9.  Finally, on hole 10 I managed to make a 45 footer on the elevated basket for birdie 3.  A step in the right direction, unfortunately while going for the eagle 2008 Veterans Park Openopportunity on hole 12 I came up just a little short.  I followed that shot up by throwing OB again to net another 7.  Like round 1, I did not stick with my game plan of playing the LHBH off the tee.  So I took another BUNCR stroke and another 6 on 888.  After missing a long birdie opportunity on 14 I proceeded to bogey hole 15.  With three holes left, I needed to shoot par or better to keep my score out of the upper 70’s.  After threes on 16 and 17 I managed to make the shot of the day on 18.  I played the LHBH shot off the tee and ended up well short of the tree (with the help of a roll).  That’s ok because this set me up for my huge second shot.  I played a big, sweeping hyzer around the tree and over the OB area and managed to skip it down 15 feet left of the pin!  Low and behold I made the short birdie putt for the unexpected three.  It felt good to end the round on a good note.  To be able to finish the last two holes in six strokes is something to be proud of.  I ended up shooting a 75, one stroke worse than the first round, but played the back 9 much better.  It was fun watching Corey Wisenberg shoot a solid round of 65.

Following another free lunch over at the player hospitality area, I found my way over to the lead card.  I bounced between the top two cards, watching and learning.  Eventual champion Nate Doss was having a fantastic back nine.  Soon, rumors of Avery Jenkins shooting a 55 started to float around.  It seemed as if most people did not believe what they were hearing - I myself was skeptical.  While up at the pro shop, waiting for the lead card to finish up, I saw for myself that Avery did shoot a 55.  In a daze, thinking about Avery’s near perfect round, I heard that Nate had just birdied 18 to shoot a 55 as well!  I had watched the majority of Nate’s round and had no idea that he was shooting that hot.

I had checked out of the hotel in the morning and was planning on staying with local disc golfer, Matt Peckham for the remainder of my trip.  Before I made it to Peckham’s place, I decided to go watch the distance finals.  Unfortunately, conditions for big D were not very good.  Garret Gurthie ended up edging out Avery Jenkins and taking home the distance title in front of a large gallery.  GG’s winning shot was only a mere 510 feet.  Again, the conditions were very poor for max distance.

With two poor rounds under my belt, I had secured myself an early tee time.  My card consisted of myself and 3 masters aged players.  I was the youngest on my card by nearly 20 years.  I needed to put together a good round if I wanted to make the cut for Saturday.  This was going to be tough to do with the way my round started.  After a bogey on #2 I bounced back with a birdie on hole 3.  This would be the last time during the round that I would be at even par or better.  I followed up a bogey on 4 with a double on 5.  I was starting to try and do too much and it was costing me.  I took a step in the right direction when I drilled the basket off the tee on #7.  Unfortunately, I missed the ace by inches and my spike hyzer skipped off the basket to leave me with a 20-25 footer for birdie.  Clank! My putt bounced off the band.  Another missed opportunity.  With plenty of golf to go, I was trying to keep a positive attitude.  With a crisp dollar in my pocket for my metal hit from Matt Lacourte Jr, we continued on.  Here is how hole 9 played for me- Throw my drive OB, next shot is in bounds up to the landing zone, following shot OB, next shot up to near the basket, missed putt and then a drop in.  This was a dagger.  I ask my group for help counting the hole, as it became a bit of a blur for me.  We initially came up with 7 strokes.  This was not going to help my cause.  It was a devastating moment that was about to get worse.  While waiting to tee off on 10, a member of my card pulled me aside and said he thought that we may have incorrectly scored the last hole.  After recounting, it was confirmed that I had indeed taken an 8, not a 7.  This was rough, because I pride myself on following the rules and playing the game honestly.  Even though it was an honest mistake, I still felt bad about it.

Moving on to the back- instead of getting aggressive and possibly running up my score even more, I played it smart and stuck with my game plan.  On #11, I had a great chance at a birdie 4, but again hit the band on my putt.  I was happy to only take a 5 after carding 7’s the first two rounds.  I stuck with the LHBH off the tee on 12 only to not land my first shot in bounds.  My second one was a good one and got me on my way to another 6 on 888.  Keeping in fashion with the rest of my round, I missed another birdie putt on hole 17.  Fighting the urge to let some aggression out and go big on 18, I played my tee shot left handed and ended up in bounds but next to the tree.  After two putter shots I had a death putt around some bushes that I needed to hit for the par.  Knowing that I was on the bubble for the cut and that making it could help my chances for playing on Saturday, I decided to play safe and lay up to the basket and take my bogey 5.  I carded a 76 on what would be my final round for the 2008 USDGC.  Even if I had made the putt on 18, I still would have missed the cut by 2 strokes.

In a daze about my performance, I grabbed a quick bite at the player hospitality area and made my way to the lead card.  While my rounds had moved rather quickly, the top cards experienced long waits and slow rounds.  I was surprised to see many of the top guys taking advantage of the putting areas on holes 4 and 12.  Only once or twice during the week did I take advantage of the rules variance.

After watching some amazing disc golf from the top cards, it was time for dinner and drinks.  Peckham, Chris Sprague, who was also staying with us, along with a few others and myself, went out for margaritas before the player party.  Soon I was following Peckham in his INNOVAN with our destination being the Longbranch Bar.  This was the beginning of a long night.  We were a little late to the start of the party and 2008 Veterans Park Openmissed out on the appetizers and most of the free beer.  The player party was rocking and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.  At center stage, Pete May was kicking but in the ping-pong challenge.  It was pretty good entertainment, after Pete dismantled the competition it was time for the putting finals.  I had no doubt in my mind that Eric McCabe was going to win.  McCabe started out nailing just about every putt until he got to the long basket.  The crowd was going wild and the next thing that happened was unexpected, McCabe started missing and didn’t stop missing.  This left the door open for Kyle Crabtree to take home the putting title.

The rest of the player party was fun with drinks and frisbees flying all over the place.  Everyone was having a great time and it was no surprise to see Brian Schweberger tearing up the dance floor.  No matter where Schwebby is, whether on the course or dance floor, he always seems to be having the time of his life.  It was getting late and Sprague, Peckham, myself and our DD loaded up in the Innovan to grab some Denny’s and go home.  Well, Denny’s turned out to be a mess- we weren’t served for 25+ minutes and then when we finally put an order in, the time kept passing and our food was no where to be seen.  We’d been sitting around for over an hour.  Our table was divided; Peckham and the DD were ready to head out while Sprague and myself wanted to wait it out.  Next thing I know, the Innovan is pulling away without Sprague and me.  With no ride and no cabs to be seen, we walk the mile or 2 back to the Longbranch.  By this time, the bar is closed and parking lot nearly empty.  All of a sudden I hear brakes screeching and see a car wildly whip into the parking lot.  Without looking, Sprague turns to me and says, “That has to be Anthon and Rico.”  Sure enough, Josh Anthon and Steve Rico pull up to us and start chatting with Sprague.  Sprague tells them our story and they agree to give us a ride to Peckham’s.  After relying on my GPS all week, I was pretty clueless to where we were going so it was up to Sprague to navigate us.  After one of the crazier rides of my life and a bunch of wrong turns and E brakes, we finally made it.  With that said, Anthon and Rico are two stand-up guys; I definitely owe them a favor.

2008 Veterans Park OpenAlthough I would have rather played, it was nice to sleep in a little bit.  I packed up my bags and was off to Winthrop.  The final round was a 2-man battle between Doss and Jenkins.  Doss held off to win his first US Championship.  And again, for the second year in a row Jenkins would have to settle for another 2nd place finish.  I took one more stroll through the pro shop and bought up a ton of USDGC stuff, including a set of the spectator Rocs.

A large group of golfers went over to a Mexican joint down the road to celebrate a successful USDGC.  I went and hung out for a little bit before I took off for Charlotte.  I had an early flight that I needed to make in the morning.

Once back in Illinois, I went straight to the course to check out the local C-tier.  I hung out with the TD, watched my friends finish up their rounds and then ran a massive USDGC themed ring of fire.  I gave away USDGC stickers, hats, discs and even a pair of Innova socks.  It was my way of saying, thanks for all the support.  It was a great way for me to cap off an amazing week.  I urge everyone to try and make it to the USDGC, whether it be as a competitor, staff or to spectator.  This is one experience that you do not want to miss out on.

Of course I’m disappointed with my poor performance, but the United States Disc Golf Championship was more than just another tournament.  It was a goal.  It was a journey and I can’t wait till next year when I start my quest for a second star.  I hope my second star includes playing a 4th round!

I’d like to give a special thanks to my Dad for his moral and monetary support, Brett Comincioli for being a great TD and State Coordinator, Shelly Schmidt for her editing help, Matt Peckham for the hospitality, Paper or Plastic Sports, Lifetime Disc Sports, the whole USDGC Crew and last but not least to all the disc golfers of Illinois:  I had a great time representing you!

Nice work getting the USDGC, Wrangler and I are proud. You’ve come a long way since the Miller Park days. Your focus and determination is an inspiration to us all. I am grateful for all the time we’ve spent on the course together and look forward to the rounds ahead.

I especially look forward to taking you down in Oregon. If you want I can toss you a few strokes since we’ll be playing my home courses (a little friendly provocation).

Much love and peace your way…

Excellent article Dana, thanks for sharing your experiences. You did a fine job representing all Illinois disc golfers.

I am looking forward the Greater Peoria Open that you are TD’ing next May 30 and 31. In 2009 the GPO is coming back as an A Tier Event. Thanks again for the fine article.

Congratulations, Dana, on playing in your first USDGC! Thanks for writing about your experiences at Winthrop and your preparation for it. I had no idea that you practiced as much as you do. I appreciated the opportunity to participate in the ring of fire for several items that you brought back. That was fun. Again, thanks for sharing!

Dana, This was excellent. Your article gave me a chance to re-live one of the best experiences I ever had gaining my first star with you.

I smiled when I read the part about you sitting at the players meeting with some Wisconsin Friends. I was on of the Wisconsin Friends :)

Photographers do this for a living, every single day — they point their lenses toward every single corner of our world and somehow make the mundane mesmerizing through their artistic eye. It’s all a matter of being aware of your surroundings and realizing that there are some really amazing and interesting things to look at, even if it may just be something so simple as a wall being covered up by paint.

Self-importance is our greatest enemy. Think about it - what weakens us is feeling offend
ed by the deeds and misdeeds of our fellowmen. Our self-importance requires that we spend most of our lives offended by someone.
