New Discraft Discs Review: Z Comet and Z Force - Winners: #110 and #137, Lawrence Leonardi and Eric Jubin

Discraft Z Comet and Discraft Z ForceBY ZAC BIBERSTINE: Let me start off with a tiny bit of background. I am a 26-year-old Ultimate Frisbee conversion that has only been in the disc golf world since mid to late 2007. That being said, I’m no seasoned pro. I’m also no expert in everything disc golf, but I know what I like. I prefer discs that I can depend on, discs that are predictable and responsive; this is what gives me the confidence necessary to play well. I also prefer comfortable discs, a disc that I don’t have to think about to throw. I tend to play by feel, and a disc that seems to meld with my hand lets me concentrate on the shot and not the prep work. I need a disc that will react to and support my strengths. And most importantly I know what I do poorly, and what I haven’t learned yet.

This is where the Comet comes in. It is easy to control, easy to manipulate, and has amazing glide. It will allow you to learn every shot, and show you exactly how you throw. Many players, young to the sport, start out with very, very stable discs. This over-stability masks many flaws in a player’s throw and release with a giant hyzer every time (trust me, I know). With a disc like the Comet, you are able to not only control the flight-path of your disc, but also learn throwing ‘from the ground up’. The Comet will hold any line as a touch disc or approach disc, will flip up and fly straight when you need a low straight shot that never fades, or will give you that ever-elusive long slow turnover.

My game developed from a forehand centric standpoint. Playing ultimate for so many years, your forehand is dominant, and is a much easier adaptation to disc golf discs, than the backhand. Learning the backhand was, and is, a much more tiresome pursuit. I learned first on a slower mid-range disc, the Buzzz, and worked my way to drivers and stable drivers. The one thing that I still am lacking is the long slow turnover. When testing the Comet, this is exactly where it fits in my game. I can already throw long anhyzer shots, but these shots incorporate stable discs and anhyzer releases. The shot I have been longing for is the one that flips up, flies straight, then ever so slowly falls right. This is precisely what the Comet will do. When thrown hard with a hyzer release, the Comet will flip up to flat and glide for days, slowly turning to anhyzer and falling off to the right. This is the first time that I have found a disc, when thrown backhand, can mimic the flight of a forehand shot… and without the skip or fade. It will float down and stay put. Putters tend to copy this flight path, but require much more air to go a long distance while the Comet’s glide enables a lower flight path.

This disc is what every new player should learn with. If there were a disc golf god, and he or she was merciful, every super-fast, crazy-stable driver would be taken out of the hands of the newcomer, and replaced with the Comet. Beginning with a disc like this would eliminate the adjustment for the one disc player, to the tournament player. To learn the technique it takes to manipulate a slow straight flying disc like the Comet, would both give a new player the necessary foundations of throwing as well some new found confidence in their accuracy. And it serves the experienced player just as well.

Now that you have used your new Comet to learn the fundamentals of throwing, fast-forward to the other end of the spectrum… the Force. This is precisely the disc for all of you distance hungry strong-arms. Or it could be a great addition to those of you trying to reach those elusive long pin positions.

The Force is an extremely fast, extremely stable, wide winged driver. If you are familiar with this thing called the Internet, I’m sure you’ve heard something about it. Rated at Discraft’s 2.0 the Force is not only fast and stable, but offers a nice amount of glide. The stability makes them choice for forehand and backhand distance. The Force can handle a good snap and high arm speed, as well as headwind. For those with power, this driver can be thrown with a little hyzer, flip up, have a full flight, and always finish predictably. It is great for big flex shots off the tee for distance. We all know that the super wide wing discs are all the rage today, and among them I think the force has the perfect formula. It’s fast, it’s high speed stable, it has great glide, its predicable, and its not overly nose angle sensitive. There are more stable discs, as there are discs with more glide, but the combination of features of the Force is textbook.

This disc will fly as far on a sweeping hyzer, as its predecessors accomplished in a full ‘s-pattern’ flight. You can tell right out of your hand that this thing is fast. This Z-plastic Force has great grip, the flight plate is thin due to the width of the wing and distribution of plastic, so the top is gummy enough to get a good grip but not floppy at all in your hand. This plastic is resilient; I’ve been throwing it for a week into trees, ice, and frozen ground. There is barely a scratch on it, let alone any dings or gouges. This disc is a staple in the bag of anyone who wants a very stable driver, but doesn’t want to sacrifice any speed or distance. The Force is so dependable; it has become my first instinct in disc selection. Give it a week, I bet you’ll like it.

You are 71 PDGA #’s behind me, therefore, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Just kidding, good article, I love to see how other people write about the flight of discs.

I love the fact that a person that has been playing for a tad over a year is writing an article on discs. Many people forget once they play for a bit how hard some discs can be to throw.

I’ve been wanting to try a Comet. Pick me! :)

Have an ace with the X comet now it’s time for the Z to bang the chains and then there’s the force, well I think this baby will speak for it self, gonna Park It from 400′+

Please send my comet at max weight and force right around 172g. THX and go discraft. It’s all about the consistency!

  22. Mike Jenkins on January 27th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Would love to get 2 of my favorite discs in my favorite plastic

  23. Scott Kickbusch on January 27th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

I’ve recently gone back to Comets to work on my form. Once you figure out that you can’t torque monkey on a Comet, you can put it on any line you want. Add in that glide and it’s one of the best discs you can throw. It’s great to see Discraft finally put some effort back into promoting this great disc. I’ve got a spot in my bag just waiting for one in Z.

  24. Nathan on January 27th, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Solid review that mirrors my experience. I’d like to put in a plug for the Discraft Surge SS ESP FLX…it makes a terrific complement to the Comet/Buzz/Cobras.

    Love that Z plastic…

  25. ziggy on January 27th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

    Comet indeed.

I have had a stack of them and always up to sharing when I discover an ultimate throwr crossin over to the dg scene. I definitely jumpin at the chance to replenish and introduce 2 more players if I ever sniff a winnings.

Thanks for the review and look fwd to more players and their tales!

most of my disc are discraft, but i have never thrown any of the above disc. would love to. great review, i have short hands & not a lot of power, so the force is too much disc for me.

  41. Matt Monczka on January 27th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

    Love them Comets

  42. Josh Taylor on January 27th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Force and Comet in Z = sweet! Good article too!

  43. Jay Kuzmak on January 27th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

Great article. I really like the way it was written. I love Discraft discs and have been wanting to get the Comet as too many people have told me how amazing a disc it is. I love throwing anhyzers and this is supposedly the disc for annys. I also think it would help me as I re-work my technique.
I have thrown the Force before and it is an awesome disc. I love it for forehands and I love the Z plastic.

  44. Sean Blazo on January 27th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

sweet. i won’t buy them, but i’ll try them if i win.

  49. Jason Liechty on January 27th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

wow! im really curious about that z-buzz! i hear so many great things about them! it would be very nice and useful to have a mid range disk that can perform with an accurate and consistent hyzer flip!

Awesome, I cannot wait to get my hands on these babys one way or another…Get review, and I hope to firld test them as soon as the snow is gone.

  54. Dayton "DrX49er" Johnson on January 28th, 2009 at 12:38 am

I like Discraft. It’s been the brand I’ve used the most. Looking forward to trying a Comet and a Force. I recently picked up a Surge and I love it!

  55. chris kerr on January 28th, 2009 at 12:46 am

i would like to score these as i am already a fan of both, i have used the comet since i first started playing disc golf, i started with an old blue one which i used up until i lost it last summer, i then pu a orange esp limeted edition one to replace it and its in my bag now along with a milky white 168g sparkle z force, these two models are already among the main players in my game.
nothing beats a comet for tight tunnel shots, or that sometimes needed sweeping glide to the right shot with a controlled landing, that a forehand shot sometimes cant give you.
and the force, well like Zac, i started out forehand dominant in my game, but have really started working hard in the last few years on developing my backhand shot as well, and as Zac stated, the force for me is the driver that if i had to choose only one driver to use backhand and forehand it would be my choice as its fast, and just the right stability that i can crank on it forehand or backhand but yet not have it flip over or be so stable that it starts hyzering soon as it leaves your hand, it reminds me of the exclones i used to throw, except faster, with a very predictable long flight that you don’t have to force out of the disc…….hey ! maybe that’s why they named it the force ! may the force be with you !!
well in closing, a z comet has been on my list of discs i would like to have for awhile, but the limited runs they did of those until now made them expensive and hard to find, so i was totally stoked to hear they were making a regular run of z comets, and i would love to add a heavier force to my bag as well.

  56. Noah Brooks on January 28th, 2009 at 2:28 am

I have been wanting to try the Force!… especially in Z!

  57. Derek Tonn #35462 on January 28th, 2009 at 5:26 am

The folks with the highest PDGA member numbers need the most help (free plastic), right?! :-) Seriously though…good write-up. I’ve always wanted to give the Force a try (and haven’t thrown Z plastic yet). Who knows? Maybe I’ll get lucky…

  58. goose gosnell on January 28th, 2009 at 8:23 am

    Fresh discraft plastic…yummm!!!

  66. Ren on January 28th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

I use to throw only Innova plastic. Over the past year or so I have found that Discraft plastic has a better flight pattern for my throwing styls. Good review.

  67. Jake M. on January 28th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Wow! Sounds like these discs are definately worth a try. In my short time playing disc golf I’ve only thrown one Discraft model: an old, beat up EliteX Storm that I stumbled across. I might be convinced to open up to Discraft a lot more if there were a few free discs involved. *wink/nudge* LOL!

  68. Tino Medina on January 28th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Love Discraft. I think the new logo looks retro which makes it way cool in my book. Love to have these

  69. toby w on January 28th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

One of my first discs was a beat up Comet donated to me. I still have this disc in my bag and would love to throw a new and improved version. Discraft midranges have become my favorites.

  88. David Clayton on January 28th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Just bought a regular Comet to go with my Surge. If I like the Comet, as I think I will, I will try the Z Comet also. I read that the Comet is a keeper. We’ll see if it can help a 62 year-old dinosaur.

  89. Kenny Lee on January 28th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

You may want to try the comet in softer plastic as well.

Yeah really great text, also really looking forward to try these discs, whenever it’ll be

  91. Mike Clark on January 28th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Good Article. Luv my Discraft plastic. The Force is an awesome disc. I will have to give the Comet a try.

  92. Andrew Gregos on January 28th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

I’m not sure the difference of the Force in ESP to Z. I have the ESP, but would like to try the Z. Seems to make a big difference in my Flicks and can’t believe they stopped make the 150g Z Flick which is the one I like better. I’ve never tried a comet, but I’d like to, as I like my buzzes.

I’d love to try them out!

  96. Jason VanOver on January 28th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Well written article by a guy playing about the same time as me. I have a friend that throws a Comet about 50% of his shots with it at our small course. He brags about it all the time but we don’t have a Discraft dealer in the area so it’s hard to feel a new Discraft discs without buying on the internet. That’s always tough for me becuase your spending money on something you don’t know if you will like or not. Same with the Force. It’s hard to spend money on it without getting to touch it first. Anyway, nice article.

A free Comet is a good way to try it out! I do like my Force in certain situations though.

  107. Joe Vaughan on January 28th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

    I love the comet!

  108. Kevin Daniel on January 28th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Been wanting to try the Comet and I heard the free ones fly better.

  109. Matt Kulp on January 28th, 2009 at 5:47 pm

Don’t like the force but Z comets are the greatest.

  110. Lawrence Leonardi JR on January 28th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

I have been playing since 2006 so not much longer. Started with a 150 class shark. Now that I have learned to throw properly I am throwing the Whippet-X and Excaliber with ease. However, I would be very interested in seeing how a comet would be in my hands. I currently use a crystal buzz or KC Pro roc for those long sweeping shots. Also Never used a force and if it throws like he said I would love to let one of them rip. m

    Good Luck to all entrants!

  114. Derek Haas on January 28th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

I’ve thrown a force and it’s a pretty nice disc. Haven’t tried throwing a comet yet, may have to pick one up.

    I Win! :)

  122. rawb on January 28th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

sweet! i have been throwing a force for some time now. definitely one of my go to discs for shots over 400 and hyzer bombs. im pumped they came out in z plastic due to z usually being a bit more stable. i also think the esp force gets kinda flippy after a bit

  123. Brad Field on January 28th, 2009 at 9:27 pm

I can’t wait to get a lighter force, and the Z comet should be the perfect mid.

  124. James Powell on January 28th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Haven’t thrown a Comet in years. Would love to try the Force in its lightest weight as well!

  125. Andy on January 28th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

    Go Discraft!

  126. erb on January 28th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

Zac seems to be a noob if he uses the comet for slow turnovers. its to bad that he writes that about the disc and then the rest of us read it and get the impression that thats what it’s used for. It’s really a good mid for a large variety of shots not just the late turnovers. I have yet to throw the force so i can not comment, i can’t see it replacing my x-cals or teebirds any time soon either.

  127. Zac Biberstine on January 28th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Thanks 1000rated for giving me the opportunity to do this, and thanks to everyone who spent the time reading. its nice to hear the comments, and i wish you all the best of luck in this contest. For all of you who expressed interest in either disc, I hope that you find a way to get your hands on these, at least to give them a try.

‘erb’, Did you read the whole article? Yes i said the comet is good for slow late tunover shots, but i said more than that. For example, “The Comet will hold any line as a touch disc or approach disc, will flip up and fly straight when you need a low straight shot that never fades, or will give you that ever-elusive long slow turnover.” The review was simply my honest experience and perception. I also believe it to be both fair and correct. Perhaps I should have spent more time describing the other uses for the disc. However, the way this disc would impact my game quickly made its self evident. I did focus more on this part of the disc’s utilization.

Either way I’m glad that you agree that its a good midrange, but am unsure of the necessity of a personal virtual attack. If it was necessary, you should at least leave your real name.

I wish you all, new or experienced, luck in the pursuit of that perfect golf game. Ill be right beside you in that endeavor.

If the Comet is anything like the buzzz or the Innova Kite that I found, I will love it!!! And reading the product description for the Forse, that disc would fit well with my other discs…I would like to be entered in the drawing for these two discs… You can never have too many, and with me only playing for a few months, I think that I would benefit from trying other discs, and seeing what works best for me…

  148. Craig Dyke on January 29th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Good thing Zac writes as well as he plays :) I have seen him go from goofy looking backhands to a great all around game. I use my ESP comet for a lot of my mid range shots so I would love to have one in Z.

I carry 4 ESP forces in my bag right now and wouldn’t mind having a super stable Z one in there to replace my domey ESPs.

Way to go Brian, this site wastes more work time than you would ever know :-)

I found a link to this site on the discgolfersr.us site through the forum. Wow. what a cool site. Also, the above review was a good read. Thanks to Zac (who shares my name)! Here is Cali we don’t hear as much about Discraft as we do about Innova, but I am sold on the Comet. If I don’t win this thing I will buy one anyway. I am junkie to to the Innova Coyote, and it sounds very similar. I love midrange discs that are not just stable. Don’t get me wrong - I love my rocs, but there should be more to a midrange than that you know? PICK ME DUDE!

  166. JMan on January 31st, 2009 at 4:37 pm

A huker of Discraft discs since 1980, I loved the hype on the Force, but dislike ESP plastic, so I waited for the Sparkle Z. Now with a stock Z run I can obtain back ups for under 20 bones, which is good. I can’t say enough about the Force; many of the folks I huk with are a decade younger and I love watching my light Force pass their discs in the fairway. Quite possibly the best disc coming out of Discraft since the Crush.

I love a good beat in Roc though and someone told me it’s like that off the bat. That got my attention. I’m a fan of finesse discs. Thanks for the contest.

  176. Matt Shustack on February 2nd, 2009 at 12:44 am

Great review, it covered a lot of information in a short piece. There were a couple typos, for example: “The Force is an extremely fast, extremely stable, wide winged driver. If you are familiar with this thing called the Internet, I’m sure you’ve heard something about it. Rated at Discraft’s 2.0 the Force is not only fast and stable, but offers a nice amount of glide.”

But all in all, a very informative article. I can confirm everything you said about the Force because I just got one in ESP, and I’d love to double it with a Z.

Comet has been a staple of the discraft line up for many years now. The z comet is great because it keeps it’s characteristics even longer. The z force is so sweet because of it’s predictable stability.
